The Debtor List – what is it, and what can it be used for?

The Debtor List – what is it, and what can it be used for?

Debitorlisten er et gældsregister, der på vegne af erhvervsdrivende registrerer dårlige betalere – både virksomheder og privatpersoner.

The debtor list is owned and operated by Denmark's largest debt collection company, Collectia A/S - from which a large part of the information in the debtor list also originates.

Oplysninger fra Debitorlisten giver virksomheder mange muligheder for at reducere antallet af ubetalte fakturaer – og dermed minimere økonomiske tab.

In this article, we focus on what the Accounts Receivable List is and what it can actually be used for.

What is a debt register?

A debt register is a register of bad payers that can be used as a tool in a debt collection process. The debt register is subsequently used as a reference tool for other businesses - for example, in connection with credit rating and monitoring a customer's financial situation.

In Denmark, there are two major debt registers: RKI(Ribers Kredit Information) and Debitorlisten.

RKI is owned and operated by the Irish company Experian, while Debitorlisten is owned and operated by the Danish debt collection company Collectia based in Brøndby.

What can you use the Accounts Receivable list for?

As a debt register, the debtor list has two main purposes and functions.

Being registered in a debt register such as the Debtor List has major consequences for a debtor, as they are then formally listed as a bad payer. This will often mean that the debtor will have limited opportunities to take out subscriptions, take out credit or loans - or may be faced with stricter payment terms, including demands for cash payment.

A growing number of companies that create customers, provide credit, loans or similar are increasingly making use of debt registers such as the Debtor List. This makes it possible to assess potential customers - and possibly reject them, demand a higher deposit or first-time payment, or not offer credit or create a customer relationship at all.

Therefore, using the Debtor List as part of the debt collection process has a big impact - as many debtors will do anything to avoid being registered and thus maintain their creditworthiness towards other companies.

In other words, the Debtor List has two purposes: to serve as an effective tool in the debt collection process through registrations - and to provide information to companies that want access to this data for credit assessment and screening of new and existing customers.

How to use the Accounts Receivable list

If you're a business and want to use the Debtor List, it's easy.

In addition to payment remarks from the Debtor List, you can also retrieve credit score, CPR validation, address change information, status, key figures and much more.
