A pledgor is a person or company that pledges their assets as security for a loan or credit. This can be anything from real estate and vehicles to valuables or intellectual property. The pledgor gives the lender a legal guarantee if the debt is not paid.
Why become a pawnbroker?
Often it is the lender who requires a mortgage as a condition for granting a loan. This reduces risk and increases the likelihood of the loan being approved. Without collateral, an application may be rejected as the lender lacks security.
It is rarely the mortgagor themselves who proposes to provide collateral, but it may be necessary in order to access financing.
What assets can be pledged?
In principle, anything of value can be used as collateral, but in practice it's more common:
- Real estate
- Vehicles
- Valuable art or jewelry
- Intellectual property rights such as patents or licenses
- The choice depends on the value of the asset, how easily it can be realized and the lender's assessment of risk.
- Forms of pledging
There are two main forms that a pledger can take:
Hand glove: This is where the asset is physically handed over to the lender. It could be a painting, a watch or other items that can be stored safely.
Underpant: Here, the asset remains with the pledgor but is legally registered, typically through land registration. It is especially used for home loans where the property is still in use even though it serves as collateral.
Pros and cons for the pledger
Pledging assets as collateral allows you to take out loans that could not otherwise be granted. On the other hand, the pledgor risks losing the valuables if the loan defaults. Therefore, it is important to consider the risk carefully before agreeing to a deal.
The role of the pledgor in credit granting
