Data validation

The term data validation refers to the process(es) that validate data - improving, updating, cleaning or checking data so that it can be used for what the end user wants to use it for.

Every day, our data is validated - often against one or more central databases, which are then used as a reference. The most frequent databases for data validation are the CPR register and the CVR register, as these two databases contain all common and relevant information about Danish people and companies.

Data validation is done to ensure companies have the best possible data - that is accurate, up-to-date and valid.

How does data validation work?

Data validation happens every day - when you shop online, sign up as a customer with a company or apply for a loan.

Data validation can be done in a number of different ways, but what they all have in common is that validation is done against one or more databases - typically the CPR register and the CVR register.

The CPR or CVR register will typically receive some information that is then washed or updated from the respective databases.

In rare cases, the company may also have its own databases that the data validation is done against, such as ERP or accounting systems.

Why should you data validate your information?

There are many good reasons to data validate your data - especially if you work with customer data.

With data-validated information about your customers, for example, you ensure that all information is correct and complete.

Without correct or complete data in your internal systems; customer database, ERP or accounting system, you risk sending your goods to the wrong address - or sending an invoice incorrectly.

Without a data-validated customer register, you also run the risk of a lawyer or debt collection agency rejecting your debt collection case if the information on your customer is incorrect or incomplete. By its very nature, a debt collection case cannot be opened against a customer if the address is incorrect - and the customer has never lived at the address.

In other words, data validation is good business for you as a company - because incorrect or incomplete data can have major financial consequences for your business.
