Payment history

Payment history

Payment history refers to the documented record of a customer's past payments - typically in relation to invoices and payment agreements. It shows whether a customer pays on time, late or not at all - and can span months or years depending on available data.

Many companies use payment history as part of their customer follow-up, while several digital services and subscription solutions offer their users access to their own payment history as part of self-service and transparency.

A valuable insight into payment behavior

For businesses working with customers on credit, payment history can provide a solid basis for decision-making. It provides insight into the customer's payment patterns - and therefore both their ability and willingness to pay.

A key tool in credit decisions

When you're considering offering a customer credit, you should consider all available data - including payment history. It can help you assess whether a customer is reliable, but it should never stand alone.

Late payments can be caused by temporary issues or external factors such as delivery errors, unclear communication or administrative misunderstandings. Therefore, payment history should always be combined with other data sources such as credit lookups, financial analysis and monitoring.

Where and how do you find customer payment data?

Most modern ERP and accounting systems allow you to pull reports of invoices and associated payments. Here you can see when an invoice was issued and when (or if) it was paid. However, to get the most accurate insight, it requires that payments are continuously booked and matched correctly.

Alternatively, you can match payments in online banking with payment deadlines on invoices - however, this is a more manual process that rarely scales effectively.

Supplement with data-driven credit information

At Qatchr, we recommend that payment history is part of an overall picture of the customer's financial behavior. In practice, it should be combined with external credit data, monitoring and automated analytics to provide the best possible decision-making basis.

By using credit tools that continuously monitor customer payment patterns and records, you can react proactively and adjust your terms before a challenge arises.
