Debtor register

A debtor register is a debt register that creditors can register debtors in if a debtor has unpaid invoices or other balances with the creditor.

Other creditors can look up a debtor register to see if the customer is registered in the register. Access to a debtor register allows other creditors to make credit assessments based on the information in the register.

Most companies choose to manually look up a debtor register - but others also choose to subscribe to the information from it. This allows you to receive information about your customers if they are registered in one or more debtor registers.

In simple terms, a debtor register is a register of bad payers.

Debtor registers in Denmark

In Denmark, there are basically two major debtor registers that companies retrieve information from. These are:

- Debitorlisten, administered by one of Denmark's largest debt collection companies, Collectia A/S
- RKI (Ribers Kredit Information, administered by Experians)

The two debtor registers receive information about bad payers from their customers - typically debt collection lawyers and debt collection companies.

At RKI, it can also be companies with a subscription to the service that report.

How do you register in a debtor register?

Basically, you can be registered in a debtor register if you owe money to a creditor.

However, there are a few basic requirements that must be met, for example, the creditor - or the creditor's debt collection company - must have sent at least three reminders for payment. The reminders must comply with the usual requirements of a 10-day payment deadline - and include a written warning about registration in a debtor register on the last reminder.

In addition, there is a requirement that the debtor has not disputed the claim - and thus has not objected to the claim.

In addition, documented claims such as judgments or settlements can also be used as a basis for registration.

It's typically debt collection companies or lawyers who report to a debtor register - but it can also be the creditor themselves.

Who can be registered in a debtor register?

Both companies and private individuals can be registered in a debtor register.

In addition, the claim must be at least DKK 200. If the debt is less than DKK 1000, the debtor is registered in a so-called closed register.

What does it mean to be registered in a debtor register?

If you're registered in a debtor register, you're basically labeled as a bad payer.

Registration in a debtor register can have major financial consequences for the individual debtor - including restricted options, credits and possibly demands for cash payment from a wide range of other creditors and lenders.

Many people with a registration in a debtor register will, for example, be refused credit - or refused to borrow money from the bank.

How long are you registered in a debtor register?

As a debtor, you are registered for 5 years in a debtor register. After the 5 years, the registration is deleted.

Although the registration is deleted after 5 years, this does not mean that the debtor still does not owe the creditor money for the registered relationship.

However, it is also possible to have your registration deleted if the debtor pays the missing payment - either to the creditor or the creditor's debt collection company/collection lawyer.
